On May 6, Hades 2 became available for Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and since then, it has generated a lot of buzz. There are some settings you might want to adjust if you want to take the Steam Deck’s roguelike action-RPG gameplay, which is influenced by Greek mythology, with you wherever you go.
Hades 2 is a fantastic performance on the Steam Deck. Depending on how old your Deck’s battery is, you’ll get a good three to four hours of continuous framerate use. Here are some tips for improving Steam Deck’s Hades 2 experience.
Turn on the back grip buttons.
There are four useful buttons on the back of the Steam Deck, but not all games have them enabled by default. Press the Steam button while you’re in Hades 2 and navigate to Controller settings > Hades II > Controller settings. This will open a new menu with “Quick Settings” and an “Enable Back Grip Buttons” slider.
The four face buttons—L4: Y Button, L5: X Button, R4: B Button, and R5: A Button—will be the default settings for the back grip buttons once they are activated. Most players should find this arrangement satisfactory, but you could wish to tweak them (the quick settings area allows you to alter which buttons they map to).
When dashing, the rear grip buttons come in very handy because they let you scroll around the map while maintaining your thumb above the four face buttons.
Think about turning off the trackpads.
There are two trackpads on the Steam Deck, right beneath the analog sticks. You may use these awesome input devices for a number of different purposes. However, you might want to disable them if you merely want to play Hades 2 (or any other game) like a standard controller because they are easy to touch with your palms while holding the Steam Deck, which could result in unintentional button or key presses.
Press the Steam button, go to Hades 2 > Controller settings > Controller settings > Edit Layout > Trackpads, and adjust both trackpads’ “Trackpad Behavior” to “None” to turn them off.
Don’t forget to turn off the shaking screen.
To make things less intrusive, you can turn off screen shake, as explained in my general Hades 2 settings tutorial. It is more distracting on the smaller Steam Deck screen, especially when traveling.
Press the pause button while the video is playing, then select Options > Accessibility > Screen Shake to turn off the feature.
Lacking: Scalability of text and HUD elements
It’s doubtful that playing Hades 2 on Steam Deck will cause you to have any performance concerns. Regrettably, there aren’t any settings to enlarge the words displayed on the screen or other HUD components.
Currently, typography and such elements are largely visible, but Hades 2 might benefit from further visual scalability features for the ideal Steam Deck experience.
